April is always a beautiful time of the year. The weather is beckoning us to play more pickleball with friends. Tournaments abound. And, the rush of social gatherings to spend with our snowbirds friends. We wish the snowbirds a safe journey home and wait for your expected return. Keep us posted on what you are doing. You will be missed!
With all the new members and a New Board of Directors we see the need to bring on a few key people to fill a very important role for PickleU. Some positions will have sporadic assignments and others will be on an ongoing basis. If you know of anyone that may fit our needs please ask them to contact us email@example.com
Record keeping - This position will be responsible for the recording of funds on a regular basis. These funds can be but not limited to monies collected at the courts for Drop-ins, membership dues, Misc equipment such as balls, paddles, clothing and related items as well as funds collected for various social events both at the courts and offsite. Others funds may also be recorded as the needs arise. The monies will be posted on a spreadsheet for sales tax and accounting purposes.
Insurance - Currently we have Liability insurance at the courts. We are looking into D&O insurance to cover Board of Director activities. We would like to find someone who would be able to get us some quotes for the D&O coverage at this time.
Website Maintenance - We have a need for someone with the ability and experience to help us behind the scene maintenance and updating of our WORDPRESS website. This is not the entering of events, building pages or cosmetics but the "working" side of the site which may be adding/deleting/changing plug-ins as needed. A working knowledge of Wordpress would be our preference.
Construction/Design - We are looking for someone with construction/design experience to help us with our feasibility study to determine if we can/should try to develop a property into a pickleball complex. The city has given us 2 potential properties to look at to develop into another pickleball venue in Indian River County. We need to have hard numbers to see if we are even in the ball park and can pull off this type of project financially. This Person(s) will need to bring in some court builders for cost estimates.
If you would like to help on any of the above "Job openings" drop us a note at firstname.lastname@example.org
These are all volunteer positions without monetary compensation.
If you are having any issues registering, you can fill out an application found at the gatekeeper station or email Mari at email@example.com
It’s $48 for existing members or $84 for new members.
Please note: As you sign in for April gate keepers will be checking to see if you have re-newed or been added as a new member. If not the $3.00 drop in fee will be charged.
Playing with Different Level Players by Coach Paul Woodman
We have all heard the advice on the way to get better is to “play-up”, that is try to get in a game with better players! This sounds good but is not always easy to jump into the mix of advanced players. Remember, better players are also looking for a challenge by playing with better players.
With that said, open or recreational play is also about having fun, meeting new people and getting in a good workout.
When you do get that opportunity to play against an advanced player, DO NOT always avoid hitting to them and picking on the weaker player.
Advanced players should give the lower level player the experience of longer rallies, variety of shots and consistency. Don’t try to intimidate the less experienced player but rather gently push them out of their comfort zone by hitting them slightly stronger serves and ground strokes, hitting them drop shots to encourage dinking and yes… tone down an overhead smash to a returnable opportunity.
In closing, remember we were all that player once that wanted to get in a better game but could not find the opportunity or were too intimidated. We are all here to have fun, love this game and want the game and ourselves to grow. Advanced players should look for an opportunity to invite a lower level player into a game as well as playing into a group of beginners. Lower level players should look for an opportunity to invite an advanced player to mix in with them for a game or two and even ask them for help or advice on a certain shot or game strategy. At the end of the day…”Its just a game".
Thanks to Randy Singer for taking the time to GoPro matches and upload them to our club FB page. Watching yourself play, can be a very helpful in improving your game. You'll see positioning, movement with partners, your good shots and your bad. We here at PBU strive to improve. I like to say we are "students of the game". If you'd like to see your play, beginner or advanced, just ask Randy. I'm sure he would be happy to GoPro a match or two.
April is high season here as we have all seen by the number of paddles in the box. Open play days have been extremely busy until around 11:30. We have welcomed dozen or more drop in players per day also.
Some members have been coming later in the morning and staying until early afternoon. also, some of you have formed small groups that meet in the afternoon when the courts are less busy. That's great!
Another thing to keep in mind, even though we have round robins on M-W-F the courts open up at around 10:30. Also, beginners usually occupies 6 courts and advanced rarely uses 6 courts. Intermediates will use almost all 12 courts.
So keep this in mind when you're planning your schedule for play.
By popular demand, the BEGINNERS and INTERMEDIATES have volunteers that stepped up and will continue the program until the end of April.
For Advanced, Dave Caswell and Juanita Burns will be taking over until the end of April.
The players thank you for you time!
We have seen lots of great play. So come out and play. First 24 in each division.
