COURTS: Both the City and Pickleball University’s Board are     exploring ways to fix courts 7-12. We would love to have the courts fixed this summer but they belong to the City so we do            not have complete control of the situation. We will inform the members as we get more information.

FUNDRAISING By Ken Robert
Over the past month, we have had 4 requests from groups requesting a cash donation and/or equipment. All are worthy cases. However, our By Laws state that our purpose is to promote Pickleball. Our board will be discussing how to handle all these requests over the upcoming months. One thing we do not want is to have our members be solicited continually by the club to make contributions.

MONDAY MORNING UPDATE March 19, 2018

Written by Mari Colacino

Why is there a Board Of Directors? This was a question I was just recently asked at the Advisory Board meeting and one they felt I should share with the membership.

For the past three years, Chuck, Ken and I have been running the club and all that it entails. We made improvements along the way when we saw a need. We took the courts from tennis courts to 12 Pickleball courts, benches, wind screens, bulletin board, organized play and programs, tournament, socials, happy hours, new computer web site, shirts, balls, paddles and the list keeps going. This process was pretty free form.

Having said that, we are now looking to possibly expand and wanted more involvement from individuals. With this in mind, we felt it important to become more structured. This would include becoming a 501c-7 and all the responsibilities that it includes which encompasses a Board Of Directors. We no longer will be making a decision with just the two or three of us, but with the input from seven Directors. It’s a definite change for both Ken and I but one that we welcome moving forward. In addition, we decided to bring on an Advisory Board to help in this process. We will always keep the essence of Pickleball University and the fun we have. This is the most important part to us and will always be.

News from the Pickleball University Advisory Board (PUAB)

Written by the Advisory Board

The first meeting of the newly formed Advisory Board was held on

that we can support you in the most efficient way possible. Stay

tuned for more information in the weekly updates from the PUAB,

MONDAY MORNING UPDATE March 11, 2018

Written by Mari Colacino

Pickleball University reserved our courts for members from Monday-Saturday from 8-2. On Sundays, it is not reserved and is open for anyone to play on any court they choose. The reason I am mentioning this, is that we had two moments and not our finest, last Sunday. We all read about the grumpy old lady, and we also had a situation where a member told a person they “can’t play on these courts.” And this past week, I personally had a member confront me with aggressive and totally unacceptable behavior. All three incidents have one thing in common. Bullying. We are better than this.

We have always been known to be kind, welcoming to outsiders and very friendly. If you need to help an individual, with procedures, directions or questions, do it in a kind voice. Remember, you once were in the same position as they are.

PROCEDURES

Since we are officially a 501C-7 we now have a Board Of Directors as I posted last week. In addition, an Advisory Board was also recently formed. What is the function of the Advisory Board? Moving forward, any ideas and or concerns from our membership can be addressed in writing to the Advisory Board. The Advisory Board will review, discuss your idea or concern and come up with a resolution if necessary. The resolution will then be moved up to the Board Of Directors to act on.

DODGERTOWNUnless you have been living under a rock you have had to have heard about Dodgertown in recent days. Before you read further you should CLICK HERE and view the recent Recreation commission video with the major topic being Pickleball at Riverside Park and Dodgertown. All of our speakers were on point! As you are aware, the play at Pocahontas is overwhelming at times. At this time of year, we are in full swing and will continue that way into April. There is no remedy to that unless players would come at later times, like maybe noon, but we have been preaching that for a long time to no avail. The short answer is more courts. As you have heard from the Riverside Tennis group they do not want to have dual purpose on those courts because the multi lines would distract them. So that issue is dead. Another option would be other city property. We have been having this discussion with the city for years and looking at several other locations such as Charles Park, Leisure Square and Dodgertown Golf course.Of all the options we feel Dodgertown offers the best opportunity for a pickleball “Community”. We are preparing to meet with the city officials prior to any serious discussions to get their ideas and see what they want or need us to do. Once we do that, hopefully in the next 10 days or so we can give you some better information. Once we find out anything of any significance we will let you know. I can tell you this that the city has nothing in the budget for capital improvements so any costs incurred will be on us.Ken Roberts

WHATS GOING ON AT POCAHONTAS

We would like to thank Chef Tony Minerva and helpers for all those wonderful pizza and cannolis. They were delicious!

Since our club is in full swing, we need a few reminders for members:

1. Players waiting for their turn to play are congregating too close to the courts  near the gate and many points have to be replayed due to this intrusion.
2. People walking through the courts to get to the open court are not always being considerate and waiting for play to end before walking behind the courts to get to theirs.
3. The North Courts are for players 3.5 and up. ANY level player can challenge players on court 9. That court is reserved for challenges on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The South court are set up for players 2.0-3.0
4. Lastly, please be respectful to paddle positions in the boxes on both courts. NO moving someone paddle.  We will have large rubber bands to bundle players that want to play together. Remember, if there are two paddles in the very front, you need to help find partners. If the paddles behind you are tied together, you may be bumped on the next open court if you can’t find partners.

A  few timely items you should know about.

  • Riverside Theatre Million Dollar Quartet! Bad news is all the allocated tickets for the 1-6 showing have been sold. The good news is that they extended the deadline to this Friday 12-29 and added more available tickets. To get our special  pricing you have to call or visit the box office and use the magic word “PICKLEBALL” to get the great deal on the tickets. Call 772-231-6990 or visit the box office  for your tickets soon or they will ALL be gone.
  • Additional time at IGC for activity! The IGC has found additional time for us on Thursdays for 11 weeks starting on Jan the 4th from 12:30 – 2:30. This is blocked time and can be used for skill based events such as round robins or ladder play. To make this time work we need about 30 COMMITTED players who will agree to show up on a weekly basis to make this feasible (Paid in advance to show commitment). We also need  a volunteer to step-up with a plan and make this time happen if it is going to. If not the time will go bye-bye. Reply to this email if you are interested in starting and running this 11 week program.
  • No Round Robins December 25th (Monday)

DEMO DAY SAT. 11:00 AM

December 15, 2017

Tomorrow will be a Demo day for Pro-Lite and Engage Paddles. Starting at 11am you will be able to Try out a new paddle on Court 6. Never know… could vault you up to the next level.

We will also have New Dura 40 Balls for $2.50 each. We suggest purchasing them in increments of 2 to avoid making change issues.

Also, remember that PICKLEU  is the ONLY entity authorised by the city of Vero Beach to SELL any product during our scheduled court time.

Keep up to date with all activities by viewing the PU Calendar HERE!

12/14/2017
After Christmas (Party) Thoughts and  Riverside Theatre Deal.

If you missed last night’s Christmas party, you missed a great night.  By the comments circulating, it seems as if fun was had by all.

It really does “take a village” to put together a party for 146 people, and I certainly couldn’t have done it alone.  Beginning with Jamie Demetrion and Ken Roberts getting the word out via Facebook, the calendar, and email and Mona Russell creating the sign up genius and Mari Colacino fielding our problems, the party wouldn’t have even gotten started.  And of course there were the elves who helped set up, man the door, clean up, decorate, and purchase our prizes–Laura Robles, Dee Zalegowski, Walter Cannara, Linda Orlow, my sister Chris, my husband Jim, Susan Walsh, Jennifer Connor, and Julianne Daniels.

Thanks to all of you who attended for bringing the delicious and plentiful food and contributing the unwrapped toys for the Elks’ toy drive.  It truly was a great night especially when Chuck O’Hanlon made his appearance.  Thank you, thank you, thank you to all.

 Merry Christmas!

Laurie McFadyen

They are holding ONLTY 20 seats for us at these prices so when they are gone they’re gone.  Following the show we may have to stroll over to Riverside Cafe for Football game watch and Happiest Hour . Call and reserve yours today 772-231-6990

For more information on the show check it out here.

Management note!

Both of the two events above one past, one future are excellent examples of partnerships we have developed for and through our members. The Christmas Party was a HUGE success because of Laurie’s efforts and all of her Elves and of course all of you who supplied the wide variety of foods. The Elks is a great service organizations their charities are diverse but mainly focus their attention and funding to Kids and Veteran program. If anyone wants info on the Elks club or to join please see me, I’m a member.

The Million Dollar Quartet is the result of another partnership. Riverside started giving us “Preferential treatment”  (and discounts) last summer for our member to their Comedy Zone and Howl at the Moon events. We in return Decorated a tree for the Festival of trees, the largest fundraiser for the Children’s Theatre program. Our own Sweet Pickadillies entry in the FOT won The Most Whimsical for their division.

Your management is so proud and thankful for ALL of our great volunteers.

Thanks again for all you do!

Ken “El jeffe” R.

Monday update 12-11-17

Fence Issue between court 6&7.

There have been a few members who feel that there should be access between the north courts and the south courts between Courts 6&7. Quotes have been given and the city is open to splitting the costs however there are some concerns.

  •         Currently there are some crowding issues located close to On-Deck Paddle boxes on both sets of courts. Games at times have to stop to allow players who are getting ready to play clear out and let play resume for those courts closest to the paddles

  •        The North courts have been designed to allow more room between them to all the fence barriers to help stop errant balls. This creates even less space between courts 7&12 allowing for more contact between players and spectators.

For these reasons it seems unwise to add more clutter in an already overly congested area. Therefore Pickleball University will not be contributing to fund this venture. However, if there are others in the group who would like to pursue this issue contact the city to discuss your plan and arrange insurance to accommodate the change in traffic feel free.

Pocahontas park has been around for a long time with the prior 4 courts separated by a dividing fence between them. If no one in the past has raised this issue with additional access there must be a reason.

 It’s a Christmas Party!!!

2017 PBU Christmas Party is right around the corner!  It is Tuesday, December 12th at 5:30 at the Elks Club in Vero Beach.  A DJ will be spinning the tunes for us and a cash bar is available. Dinner will be pot luck (NO DESSERTS PLEASE) so whip up your best recipe to share. Don’t forget to bring an unwrapped Christmas gift for a child from the Toys for Tots organization.

Court Update 12-4-17

Event Registrations!

2017 has been a very big year for PickleU and its players as we now have just under 500 members. We have seen excellent play on our courts and away in various tournaments. Our many social events such as Saturday morning feasts and periodic Happyiest Hours have given our members some additional social avenues in their lives. In the New Year we will be making some changes in the registration process. This year we have accepted walk-ins the day of the events. However this has sometimes been problematic. Many of our venues provided food as part of our requests based on the numbers we provide them in advance. In practically ALL events there have been late comers who have not registered to these events and pay at the door sometimes causing food shortages to those who made reservations. To alleviate this embarrassing situation we will be implementing an advanced reservations ONLY policy to give us an accurate count and avoid shortages. The non-sign ups may cause other problems as well. For instance, the Christmas party signup (listed below) the venue needs to have a count so they can seat us in a room for 300 or 100. So the cut off for the Christmas Party is this Thursday, Dec. 7th so don’t delay Sign Up TODAY!

It’s a Christmas Party!!!

2017 PBU Christmas Party is right around the corner!  It is Tuesday, December 12th at 5:30 at the Elks Club in Vero Beach.  A DJ will be spinning the tunes for us and a cash bar is available. Cost is only $5.00 per person. Guests are welcome. Please register each person. Dinner will be pot luck (NO DESSERTS PLEASE) so whip up your best recipe to share. We will need a few volunteers so if you can help, please sign up for those positions.

Please sign up by latest 12/7 and we’ll see you for some Yuletide Fun on December 12th.

Guests are encouraged to bring an unwrapped gift for the Toys for Tots as the Elk’s Lodge is a collection point.

P.S. If you signed up for our preliminary count, we still need you to sign up again. This time is for real!

What’s Going on at IGC:

Additional Play at IGC.

The IGC is reviewing their schedule and trying to make room for us on a Thursday PM for Round Robin play from about 1-3PM but that will be determined soon. As soon as we receive information on any additional times we will let you all know. They have also invited us to a Pickle & Pizza Party event on a Saturday evening in January TBD. It will be basically be similar to our Happiest Hour events except no alcohol permitted since it is a governmental facility. It would be nice if we had a couple (or so) volunteers to assist the IG in this effort. Any Takers??? Just reply to this email.

Regular play this week Mon, Wed, & Fri 9-NOON!
